Coronavirus: Advice to schools

We have received some calls to the school asking questions and expressing concern about the coronavirus Covid-19; we have had reports that there are some rumours circulating that we might have a member of staff here who has the virus. I do wish to reassure everyone connected with the school that we do not have anyone in the school or in the wider community who has reported any symptoms.

We are vigilant in following the government advice (updated 2 March 2020), which is available to be viewed at  https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-educational-settings-about-covid-19/guidance-to-educational-settings-about-covid-19 which advises that  anyone travelling from a Category One country/area (Wuhan City and Hubei province in China, Cambodia, Iran, Daegu or Cheongdo (South Korea) or restricted Italian cities) stays at home and self isolates for 14 days and contacts the NHS on 111. Advice for those people who have recently returned from Category Two countries/areas (China, Hong Kong, northern Italy, Japan, Laos, Macau, Myanmar, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand or Vietnam) is to continue with work and education as normal and only to take action if they become unwell and experience the symptoms of fever, cough and shortness or breath. They should then remain at home and contact the NHS on 111.

The advice to schools is that all activities should continue as usual so our consultation evening, school trips and sports fixtures amongst other calendared events will continue as planned. We are monitoring the government health guidance as it becomes available and if we do need to take any further action, we will of course advise our families as quickly as possible. However, the most important step we can take is to be reminding students to wash their hands thoroughly and regularly during the school day and we would welcome you supporting the school by emphasising this to your child(ren).

Yesterday the government set up a helpline to answer questions about the coronavirus which is available 8am-6pm Monday to Friday : 0800 046 8687. This might be useful for parent/carers to call if they have any concerns. If you have school specific questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
