Key Stage 4 Sociology

Sociology is designed to foster an understanding and critical awareness of the social world around you. Students will be encouraged to explore and debate contemporary social issues to enable them to challenge stereotypical assumptions and to question their everyday understanding of social phenomena.

What will I learn?

There are two components to Sociology:

  • Understanding Social Processes

Understanding social processes focuses on key concepts and process of cultural transmission, families, education and sociological research methods.

  • Understanding Social Structures

Understanding social structures focuses on social differentiation and stratification, crime and deviance and applied methods of sociological enquiry.

How will I be assessed?

Exam Board:  Eduqas GCSE Sociology

There will be two exams each lasting 1 hour 45 minutes. Both exams will include a mixture of short answer, structured questions and extended response essay questions. The extended response questions will require students to draw together different areas of knowledge, skills and/or understanding from across the relevant topics you have covered.

Where will this take me?

Sociology is the study of human behaviours and the interaction between human groups and institutions. Sociologists take an in depth look at social inequalities (including race, gender and class); the environment; cultural traditions; family relations; health care; globalisation; politics and social movements; and crime and justice. This understanding can set students up for any profession that deals with humans e.g. crime analyst, lawyer, police officer.
