Our primary aim is to enhance the attitudes of our students towards physical activity, in the hope that we will instil in all our students a desire to maintain active and healthy lifestyles.
In order to enthuse as many students as possible, we aim to offer maximum variety and breadth in our curriculum without it becoming too shallow. The National Curriculum requires that our students pursue a variety of activities in-depth during both Key Stages, and our aim at Claydon is to ensure students are given the opportunities to develop them in lesson, during extra-curricular activities and pathways beyond school.
Running alongside the core programme at Key Stage 4 is a GCSE PE course. The new GCSE course offers the students the opportunity to further their theoretical understanding of Physical Education whilst specialising in three practical sports.
We aim to cultivate students’ initial enthusiasm for sport, but we also rely on the support of parents in encouraging their children to join suitable extra-curricular clubs or sports centres. Together, the Physical Education department and parents can encourage and instil passionate, healthy and life-long interests that are essential for good health in an increasingly sedentary world.

Key Stage 3
The four key aims for PE at Claydon are that the students:
- enjoy participating in a range of physical activities;
- acquire the skills needed to perform confidently and competently;
- learn how to select and apply skills, tactics and compositional ideas in a range of activities;
- develop key interpersonal skills such as working with other students, communication, teamwork and sportsmanship.
All students in Years 7, 8 & 9 receive three 75 minute lessons over the two week timetable
What sports and activities will I learn and develop?
- Badminton
- Volleyball
- Netball
- Football
- Table Tennis
- Trampolining
- Athletics
- Rounders
- Cricket
How will I be assessed?
Throughout each lesson, students will be assessed by their teacher, their peers and themselves in order to continuously progress. This can be in the form of verbal feedback or written assessments.
Key Stage 4: GCSE PE - AQA Exam Board
Year 10 and Year 11 core PE - students will receive two 75 minute lessons over the two week timetable.
For students who do not choose GCSE PE, their lessons will give them the opportunity to build on and develop the skills they acquired in Key Stage 3. The lessons also give the opportunity for students to choose a certain pathway in physical education, offering them the opportunity to improve their health and fitness and their skills in individual and team sports.
We are very proud of our GCSE PE results over the past four years. The new PE GCSE was first introduced in September 2016 and below is a summary:
Students will receive two theory lessons and one practical lesson a week.
Theory lessons (60% of the overall GCSE)
Students will now predominately learn the theoretical aspects of physical education and build upon what has been learnt in Key Stage 3 using two papers:
Paper 1 - The human body and movement in physical activity and sport (30%) - 1 ½ hour paper
Paper 2 - Socio-cultural influences and well-being in physical activity and sport (30%) - 1 ½ hour paper
Practical lessons (40% of the overall GCSE)
Students will be assessed in three sports, one has to be a team sport, one has to be an individual sport and the last one can be a choice of either (30%).
Students will also have to complete a written analysis and evaluation of a practical performance (10%).
* For the 2020-2022 cohort, students will be assessed in two sports, it can be two team sports, two individual sports, or one team and one individual. (This will still equate to 30% of their grade).
Prerequisites:
- Students who select the GCSE course must be fully aware that the course is 70% theoretical and must be confident in their approach to English, Maths and Science.
- Students must show a keen willingness in Key Stage 3 PE lessons and extra-curricular activities, and be prepared to represent the school in different activities.
- Students must also be willing to be trained in leadership courses and help at local primary schools in activities such as Sports Day.
Progression:
Gaining a GCSE in PE forms a sound basis for progress onto further education in A/S level, A-Level and BTEC National Diploma in Sport and PE. The new GCSE will also support understanding of Biology.
